Be Ready to Move!
Aug 14th, 2007 by Dan Standeven
If you have been reading my blog, you probably know one of my biggest pet peaves is moving, I did a post about this called It’s Moving Day, I just wanted to add some extra info to make things go smooth.
I have come up with some handy tips for everyone who is considering moving. It can be quite an overwhelming process and being organized is the key. Here are a few things that will help that transition from old house to new house.
1) Let everyone know that you are moving to a new location, and tell them when. You will inevitably cut down on the “why didn’t you tell me you were moving” phone calls and cause yourself a lot less explaining once you’ve moved into that new house. It is always wise to keep people informed; it is our human nature we need to now what is going on.
2) Aside from friends and family, if you have time let the rest of your contacts know you are moving, it just saves hassle in the future when your financial and insurance guys are trying to track you down. Get a hold of the bank and change the address on your accounts, if you are moving to a new area, open an account a month or so prior to the move. You don’t want to get in a situation where you can’t access your money because you just opened a new bank account. It is also important to mail out change of address cards to all those important contacts. In the mean time you can go to your local post office and have your mail forwarded from your old home to your new home. This way you don’t lose any mail and you still are able to fill out the rest of those change of address cards.
3) Get rid of anything you don’t need or want anymore, why bother packing that stuff, it is just extra weight and more than likely if you haven’t used it in the old house, your not going to use it in the new house. Rather than throwing it all away, have a garage sale and make some extra money, god knows extra money will come in hand when trying to pay those moving expenses.
4) Transfer, disconnect, and connect all your utilities prior to moving. It is much nicer to move into a house that has working heat, electricity, phone and cable.
5) HIRE MOVERS, if you can afford it of course. Nobody likes to help other people move; it has to be the worst favour you can ask your friends. Spare everyone the trouble and hire some movers, for a few hundred bucks it’s worth it, your probably going to spend that anyways on truck rentals, gas, and food.
One more quick note, if you do ask your friends to help you move, be packed, be organized, be ready to go, and make sure you buy them a beer when it’s all over.
