Red Sea rig

Red Sea rig, sometimes known as Gulf Rig or Schooner Rig, is a dress code for semi-formal evening events, which in general consists of black tie attire with the jacket removed, a red bow tie and red cummerbund, although there are local variations.
History
Red Sea rig was originally a Royal Navy concept appearing circa 1800. Historically, it was felt that Royal Navy officers, being gentlemen, should wear the full appropriate uniform for all formal events, whatever the temperature. The sole exception was in the Red Sea, where the heat and humidity often made this physically impossible. Here, officers were permitted to remove their jackets in the wardroom, provided they added a cummerbund to temper the somewhat informal look.
In his reminiscences For King and Country, Nelson Albert Tomalin describes a rather home-made version of Red Sea rig worn onboard the whaler Southern Sea in 1943 as "...white shirt with epaulettes and long blue trousers with a black scarf as a cummerbund..." .
Because of its obvious practicality, Red Sea rig was adopted into civilian life, first by British diplomats in the Red Sea town of Jeddah, and later by the local British Business Group. It is now widely worn by many military and civilian organisations and is often the dress code of choice for dinner parties in British expatriate communities in the Middle East and Far East.
Red Sea rig originated prior to air conditioning as a purely practical measure, but has now become a dress-style in its own right, even if the party or function is held in an air conditioned venue.
Decorations, even in miniature, are not normally worn with Red Sea rig, although medal miniature ribbons are.
Although coloured bow ties are often (incorrectly) worn with black tie attire, this is never the case with proper Red Sea rig. The tie is always black or red, whichever the local standard mandates, and the cummerbund is always of like colour.
Variants
There are many military and civilian variations of Red Sea rig:
Original Navy: Short sleeved white shirt (open neck), formal dress trousers and black cummerbund
P&O Cruises & Princess Cruises Officers: Short sleeved white shirt (open neck) with shoulder boards, formal dress trousers and black cummerbund; however a black belt is being substitued the cummerbund more often than not.
BBG / British Diplomatic: Long-sleeved white dress shirt, red bow tie, formal dress trousers and red cummerbund.
American Diplomatic (also known as Gulf Rig): Simply black-tie attire, minus the jacket, although cummerbunds are often worn.
Royal Marines Band: White long-sleeved dress shirt, black bowtie, normal uniform pants with red side stripes, red cummerbund.
Scottish Highland: The military version consists of a long sleeved white dress shirt, black bow tie, tartan Trews and a silk cummerbund in the regimental tartan (unless this is the very dark Campbell tartan, in which case a red, green or blue cummerbund may be substituted). The civilian version is usually a long sleeved white dress shirt, black or red bow tie and kilt.
HMS Endurance: A rather distinctive version is worn on board this Antarctic ice patrol ship: Short sleeved white shirt with shoulder boards, black trousers and the ship cummerbund. This cummerbund is red and Double Sided with the ship crest on one side and a penguin on the other. Normally the cummerbund is worn with the ship's crest showing, but when in Antarctic waters, the penguin is shown. This is probably the coldest climate in which this tropical form of dress has been worn.

Has anyone been on a Royal Caribbean cruise since Sept '06 and used their Cingular phone?
I know that all Royal Caribbean cruise ships have their own cell towers as of Sept 2006. Cingular has a partnership with them and when you use your Cingular phone while connecting through the ship's cell tower you are charged an exhorbitant $2.49/min. I would like to know
(1) if the alpha tag (where it says 'Cingular' on the phone) changes when your phone switches to the ship's cell tower, and
(2) can anyone confirm if the ship's cell tower is turned off when you are in port? The Cingular CSR suggested leaving my phone off until I am a mile or two from the ship to make sure my phone doesn't connect to the ship's cell tower; however, I would imagine there would be a lot of pissed off dock workers if they had to worry about their phones accidentally connecting to a cruise ship's cell tower.

Best advice in these situations is to set your phone to "manual select network" I live close to the Canada US boarder and have to be carfule what GSM network I am on.

Finding The Right Wedding Photographer
Your wedding album will be one of the most precious memories of this big day that you will have. But have you ever noticed how so many of those "professional" pictures are all the same from wedding album to wedding album? In fact, one thing that jumps out about the wedding photographer is that for a little while on the wedding day, everything halts and it's all about him.
You know the drill. The ceremony is exciting and fun and full of joy, some tears and plenty of meaning as the bride and groom kiss and become one family. Then it's all over and everybody files out to go to the reception to dance, have cake and celebrate this union. But wait, the whole proceeding has to grind to a halt while the photographer stages the wedding party for as long as an hour or more to "recreate" the ceremony and make those perfect wedding photos. Meanwhile the reception may be getting underway and many of the guests that the bride or the groom or others in the family want to hug and share the joy with may have to go because they just can't wait out a fussy photographer.
Somehow this complete disruption to the day has become accepted as just part of what the wedding day is all about. And the worst part about it is that the photographs, while nice and well staged, look like a bunch of mannequins being arranged for a store window. The joy and fun of the ceremony is over. For decades to come everybody will say they are beautiful and meaningful but if you look closely the wedding party looks nervous, uncomfortable, bored and like they wish they were somewhere else.
Well maybe its time to throw that tradition out and put some creativity into how the wedding photos and the wedding photographer works in your wedding. By finding a photographer who will put together some wedding pictures that have some style, some creativity and some sense of inventiveness, you will have that wedding album that really is full of memories worth remembering.
To get that kind of photographer, you are going to have to start early. You have to find that maverick photographer that "gets it" that the wedding is about the people, not the gowns and the hall and that his photographs must shout out "this was a wonderful day and we celebrated this union."
You may have to look outside of the conventional "wedding photographers" listing in the phone book. An artistic photographer may be more appropriate. But be patient and find one that is just as professional as any photographer in that yellow pages but can bring some creativity and investment of getting to know this wedding party to the job of taking your important wedding pictures.
That wedding photographer should become as much a part of the wedding party as the groomsmen. After all, if he is going to capture the personality of this couple, he will have to get to know you. Spend some informal time with him and share those fun memories of when you met, those special times while you dated and certainly those very special places where important moments in your relationship took place.
Armed with that kind of creative individual in charge of your wedding photographs, you will look forward with great anticipation to what he comes up with. Many of the best shots will be created before the wedding, at some of those special places and he can Photoshop them to blend them with wedding day moments.
Above all that wedding photographer will understand that he is there to serve this wedding and capture those special moments as they occur. Sure, you may "pose" for a picture from time to time but this whole business of bringing the wedding day to a grinding halt to take stilted pictures of bored wedding party members will go out with the trash. The outcome will be wedding pictures with style, with life and a lot of love in them to reflect the love that was exchanged in those vows and the love of family and friends as they enjoyed this magical day with you.

What are the stands called that dresses are designed on?
What I'm talking about are the figures that resemble the bust/waist/hip area of a model that designers use to get the shape/size right. You see them a lot on Project Runway, basically teh beige/tan looking things they can put the dresses on while they make it instead of hanging it. Almost like a mannequin without the arms/legs and head.

Mannequins and Classification
Most consider the word ‘mannequin’ to be a generic reference to a live, three-dimensional human. The truth is that there are a variety of these human representations. Most types fall under two classifications: dressing forms and mannequins. Both types vary in the degree of human realism they present to the viewer.
From a realistic standpoint mannequins are generally more lifelike. They are often manufactured with limbs and heads. In many cases fingers and toes and ethnocentric features are applied by the sculpture. Many can be modified by interchanging wigs. Most companies use realistic paint colors to recreate racial skin tones. Eyes, lips, and false eyelashes all create more realism. Muscularity and proportionality are common features. Most models are supported by bases that are visually unobtrusive. Calf rods can often be used which permit the use of displaying complimentary footwear. Interacting well by themselves or along with other mannequins and a limitless number of other props, mannequins create and enhance visual merchandising scenes.
In contrast, dressing forms are less realistic than mannequins. They are often manufactured headless and without arms and digits. Often, construction is a white or dark fabric layer over a foam and hard shell combination. Dressing forms are usually not manufactured with legs. Support is often provided by a base, which attaches to the bottom of the torso and is visibly obtrusive to the torso in some circumstances. Without legs, dressing forms cannot be designed to display attached footwear. Dressing forms tend to be visually less proportional than mannequins because they do not include limbs, heads, thighs, digits, legs and feet. These help to establish a viewer’s point of reference. Most dressing forms are racially neutral as they lack skin tone. Without eyes, lips, and body proportions gender differentiation is limited to breasts and/or clothing designs. As dressing forms lack realism and do not interact with many props they are not used as much as mannequins for creating visual merchandising scenes.
Mannequins often include realist body parts, skin tone, muscularity, and other human features. Dressing forms are designed to represent human bodies, but lack these features and are not as realistic as mannequins. Mannequins generally are more expensive than dressing forms. In every case budget, as well as project requirements will warrant using one style or the other. Consult a visual merchandising consultant or a mannequin dressing form manufacturer for the best solution.

How to Organize Your Garage With Steel Pegboards
A garage is a tricky place to organize. For one thing, it usually ends up being the place of last resort for all the household junk you can’t bear to have in living areas but don’t want to get rid of. In older houses the basement is a good place for this stuff, but in newer homes with fully finished basements you need that space for your rec room or children’s bedrooms. The other big problem is that if you want to use a garage for its intended purpose, you do need to make room for the car also! Aside from surface area, the main limit on using fibrous peg boards is strength. Treated cardboard, wood or particle board pegboards can’t safely support heavier weight. You should use these peg boards only for holding lightweight tools, not shelving. Once you realize that you may need a stronger material, you might as well opt for pegboard made from steel.

The use of bar code SMS in mobile marketing, advertising, CRM
Bar code SMS takes place when 1D or 2D bar code images are sent
to mobile phones. The user saves the image and present it at the
access / pay point. Bar codes could be sent using MMS, EMS or
SMS technology. 1D Images are scanned with standard scanners
whereas 2D images would require a 2D scanner.
Anybody that frequents shopping malls are familiar with the bar
coding systems used by retailers to ease the line at the pay
points. No more long lines at the till as the operator just
pulls the product past the scanner and voila - the buyer pays
and are on their way.
What most people do not realize is that the bar coding systems
entails more than just the code being scanned with the scanner.
The systems normally plugs straight into a database, which is
also hooked up with the accounting system and the moment the
item is scanned, it deducts the item from the warehouse's
inventory. Each product in the database has a minimum stock
level - the moment it reaches that stock level, it sends out an
alert that x amount of a product needs to be ordered. Automated,
convenient, easy.
The above sample system serves to explain how and why bar codes
are used in the offline or sales / Warehousing side of business.
Nowadays the same principles apply to mobile technology.
With the ability of bar coding systems to be incorporated with
Office functionality, convergence of technology opened a new
automation arena in the business world. I am sure all of us at
one point or another queued at the movie theatre to watch our
favourite movie.
Just imagine no more long lines - you arrive at the movie
theatre with your mobile phone, walk past a scanner where a bar
code on your mobile phone is scanned and you take your seat to
enjoy the movie!!! That is how easy it could be with mobile
ticketing (mobile bar coding).
The process is simple - let's use e-ticketing as an example: A
customer visits the venue's web site where they book and pay
online. Confirmation of their booking or ticket is received on
their mobile phone via bar code SMS. The client saves the bar
code SMS and present their mobile phone upon arrival at the
venue, where it is scanned and access allowed.
Now that is service!!!! E-ticketing will apply to many events -
for example the upcoming 2010 World cup soccer in South Africa,
the rugby and soccer matches which takes place weekly,
conferences and events that are organized also requiring access
- just to name a few.
Mobile bar coding also plays an important role in customer
services (CRM). Retail stores that send out discount vouchers
with snail mail could now replace the paper work with bar code
SMS - on condition of course that customers give their
permission. Instead of posting vouchers, retailers could SMS a
bar code discount voucher to their clients. The client saves the
barcode on their phone. Upon arrival at the store they present
their mobile phone with the saved bar code at the pay point. The
bar code is scanned in, discount allocated to the purchase total
and new balance due calculated.
Besides the convenience factor the marketing department also
obtains a method of measuring response on promotions. With the
bar Code Scanner hooked up to the till, which is hooked up to
the office back end and accounting system, tracking of clients
making use of discount vouchers is easy to obtain. A marketing
executive's dream, as reports are produced with the push of a
button.
Convergence of mobile and web combined with offline/online
technologies are inevitable. We believe it is the companies that
join the wireless revolution that will benefit most. They will
retain more clients as they show that they carry the best
interest of their customers at heart through eliminating any
situation that could lead to customer dissatisfaction.

Does a scan of a bar code work just the same?
I have a bar code on a store card. I want to photo copy it and give it to my love ones. It's completely legal. In fact, the store gave me 4, but I want to send a pdf or image copy and send it via e-mail to them.
That should work - however I would verify that the store will accept a photo copy.
