I was reading a post on a forum called Agents Online Real Estate Idea Center where the poster was looking for some information about Real Estate Brokers and companies.

If your kids said I want to be a realtor ? And asked what company should I join, just curious which company you would advise them to join and why?

I thought this was a very good question and there were some very valid replies. It is important to shop around when looking for a broker to work for. Almost all will try to entice you into joining their firm, they of course are running a numbers game, the more Realtors they have the more money they can make.

Don’t just consider the big brokers like Remax, Royal Lepage, and Century 21. There are a lot of brokers out there all of which should get equal consideration. Why you ask? Every person is different and believe it or not every brokerage offers something completely different.

The differences can be anything from compensation to training, but all solid companies should have the following in common.

  • Big or Small the company must have a solid reputation in the community, you are just one agent and the company has probably been around for a long time. If you are a new agent you are going to be judged based on the reputation of the company you work with.
  • Customer Service is key! This is a business where customer service produces results. Make sure the company you decide to work with has a great customer service model and is passionate about providing the best possible service.
  • Check out a companies market share. Check out yearly statistics on market share, listings in a year, how many sales each year, and how many fail to sell. All of these statistics will give you a clear picture about the company, how well they service their customers, and the potential for you to have success in the industry. Remember Stats don’t lie. One quick note on this, check with your local real estate board to confirm the stats you are provided are correct.

I guess if my child comes up to me one day and asks me what company he should join first off I would tell him to do his research, and second I would tell him to go with his gut feeling. A lot of times it will come down to a few choices and you just have to go with what feels right.

I guess it’s like any job. You want to work in the one that will move you closer to your goals, help you achieve success and provide you with the proper training.

Some of the most successful realtors I know work for smaller independent brokerages who are very selective about who they bring on. They look for the best people. These are the companies you want to work for!
