In the last week I have been living my life with emotion, and what I mean by that is I have not thought rationally about how events and things should happen, I have just lived in the moment and enjoyed it. I’ve been out of town visiting with family and attending weddings, living life how life should probably be lived.

I sat down at my desk yesterday morning, settling back into my daily routine, bringing back reason and calculated thought into my daily life, and thought to myself how often does emotion play a part in selling your home? A lot!

If you own a house you don’t call it a house, you call it your home. That is because emotionally this is where you rest your feet at the end of the day. This is where your children grow up, and this is where you live your life.

If you want to sell your home, you have to take all the emotion out of it and think of it as just a house. Put all that energy into making a buyer feel like it will be their home.

This may sounds difficult and it is, but once you see your home as a house and make decisions rationally instead of emotionally the process will become much easier.

Here are a few things that may help.

  • Remember that all the personal touches and home improvements you have done over the years may not be as important to potential buyers as they are to you. So don’t get upset if those improvements don’t add as much value as you think they should.
  • Do whatever you can to make the shift from this being your home to being the buyer’s home. By that I mean remove any personal items such as photos on the walls, memorabilia from home, anything that says this is your home.
  • Remove clutter, clean out all those drawers and closets with the things you don’t need. This is a great time to pack it up and store it or even get rid of it. Keep the home as generic as possible.

When it does come time to sell your home, just keep in mind that it will be much easier to sell a house, so a buyer can find a home.
