Does anyone know what the Rev Counter should display for you to change gear?

ive got a new toyota rav4 4x4 and ive never seen a rev counter before,but the guy who sold me the car sed i should change once it goes past 20,now i know you shuld match the gear to your speed but in my old car i never touched 5th gear even when doing 50mph.Normally when im in 5th gear the rev is around 20 but today i was doing 40-50mph and slipped into 5th gear,all of a sudden the rev counter was going past 30 and it worried me as i dont ave a clue what it means,all i know is its to do with fuel consumption/performance of the car!anyone give me a clue???

the Tachometer tells you how fast the engine is turning, when you are shifting, depending on how fast you are trying to accelerate, the sooner you shift the more fuel efficient you are, so on slow acceleration if you shift around 17 or 18 it's fine but if you are trying to gain speed faster you want to hold each gear a bit longer, to about 35 or so. The reason that the tach went to 30 is because you went into 3rd gear not into 5th gear, if you went into 5th the rpm's would have gone lower not higher.
