We read from many literature pertaining to shooting landscapes at night. Things like a sturdy tripod, low ISO, small aperture, etc are inseparable for night landscape photography.
Many photographers told me that they prefer shooting cities at night. That will allow them to capture the beautiful urban lights. Not to forget light trails from moving vehicles in a busy traffic. Who will like to miss out the eye-catching neon-lit signs?
These will surely produce beautiful and attractive photographs which can very likely impress your viewers. The question is how do you differentiate yourself, if every photographer is doing and shooting the same thing?
You can consider taking night photography from a different perspective. Not necessary you will always have to include a range of buildings in the cityscape, or to have a foreground in your frame.
Why not having a longer lens to capture tighter shots? Instead of framing a series of buildings, try zooming into a particular section of the building which emits bright and beautiful lights. Such shots can be abstract and you can trigger your viewers' curiosity.
If there is a river or a puddle of water in front of the buildings, make good use of it. Why not try shooting the reflections, capturing the lights from the buildings? Once again, you can just shoot a portion of the buildings to make your photographs unique!
I am sure your photographs will even be more attractive after rain. Make good use of raindrops on metallic surfaces or window glasses, to produce random, abstract and eye-catching photographs.
Instead of shooting light trails of cars either from ground level or on overhead bridges, try capturing light trails of double decker bus. I am sure the photographs will be even more amazing!

Neon Lights And Black And White Photography?
Im In An Intro To Photography Class And For Our Last Project I'm Thinking About Taking Photos Of Old Motels With The Neon Light Signs, Does Anyone Have Any Tips About Taking Photos Of Neon Lights With Black And White Film? Or Does Anyone Have Any Other Project Ideas Consisting Of Lights?
You will have to do a test using your preferred film. Using a tripod, shoot exposures starting at 3 stops under exposed from what your camera suggests. Then in 1/3 stop increments make exposures at each value and then shoot a few over exposed shots as well.
What this will give you is the perfect exposure for your needs that gives some detail in the shadow area, yet does not overexpose the lights. Use a smaller f/stop (f/8 to f/16 would be a good range) and just adjust your shutter speed.
Once you have viewed your contacts and made a print of the two or three you think are best, then you can go back out and shoot more old hotels and motels with neon lights and have good exposures for them all.
In your notes you will probably state that to get the best exposure for signage is to under expose ... 1-1/3rd stop or what ever you find is the best for your camera, film and lighting circumstances.

Neon signs are a brilliant and amazing way to attract business. A neon “Open” sign, flashing outside a storefront is an efficient advertising tool, providing high visibility and traffic to any business.
Handcrafted neon signs have been approximately for hundreds of years and with the enhancement of manufacturing methods over time, open signs are accessible in plenty of designs and varieties. Top Considerations in Purchasing the Best LED Signs
When Purchasing an LED sign for your business there are a few things to consider in finding the best one. Here are the most important things.
First you need to consider if the sign will be mounted inside or outside. Outside signs will need to be durable. You will need one that will stand up to extreme temperature, rain and sleet. You will need a sign with voltage protection and look for one with heavy solid welding.
You will also need to consider the distance the average viewer of you sign will be when looking at it. This may not matter as much inside but outside you will need to think about this. If most of the traffic passes at freeway speed and is three hundred and fifty feet away you will need characters that are at least a foot tall to be seen well but if you are only a few feet then smaller letters are needed. The angle they will be viewing the sign from also matters.
Resolution will be affected by distance as well. You need more resolution up close but less is needed farther away. Resolution is one of the biggest factors in the cost of a sign. So on to cost. LED signs do tend to cost quite a bit. This is an important advertising expense. Many times a business has been in a location for years before they finally put up a lighted sign only to suddenly get lots of new customers thinking they just opened. Some companies will let a business lease the signs or offer financing.
You will need to look around your street and see what signs yours will be competing against. If they are all non-lighted plane signs then you may be fine with a very simple LED sign. If many have lighted signs you may want to look for one with more features to help you stand out. You will need to decide if you just want the name of you business or if you want a larger message to get across. Will you need an image or weekly specials flashing up there? Some Led signs even allow for video. Do you need Full Color or are a plain gray scale signs good enough? Full color is best for video or images.
One important factor is to know the local laws and codes on what signs you are allowed to display and where. If the sign you want will not be allowed you can petition for a variance letting you have the sign. You may not want to bother and choose a sign that will be allowed no hassle.
A poor sign can reflect poorly on your business so you will want to choose the best quality sign you can that fits in your budget. Signs that look old or poorly made will raise questions in the mind of any potential customers.
Led signs are a good cost efficient lighted sign option. They can increase business by large percentages and can cost less to run than a television set.
