Tool cabinets come in different designs and sizes. The more expensive ones have better drawer sliding mechanisms and are fashioned of thicker gauge materials.
Use containers with small drawers for smaller tools and specialty equipment; as well as spare parts, such as nails and bolts. Storing small tools in these containers will remove clutter from your work table, and shelves.
For other equipment and supplies, you can use bins and wire spools. Part bins may be used to sort supplies, while still keeping them out in the open where they are noticeable. The bins are usually Heavy Duty and each is able to hold a specific weight in parts or fasteners.
Tool boxes can be used to organize your various sets of specialty tools, such as electrical tools or finish carpentry tools. There are big storage boxes of plastic available to hold plumbing parts or electrical materials such as cables and wires. A labeled box on an open shelf can organize a set of tools for a specialty kind of work, such as installing door locks.
These are just some ways to arrange your shop tools or garage tools and keep your area clutter-free when working on a project. Try these tips now to have a more efficient and neat garage. Working there will be a lot more of a pleasure when your garage equipment and supplies are in order and kept in their proper places.

What are some creative things I could build that incorporate 15" 2x4's?
I have a stack of twenty 15" 2x4's in my scrap pile that I want to make use of. I also have two 10' boards of 2x6, two more 10' boards of 2x4, two 10' boards of 2x2, some random plywood and two 4'x2' sheets of both pegboard and 1/4" hardboard. For cutting I have a table saw, a circular saw and a 10" single bevel compound miter saw. Also on the shelf I have a couple of cans of primer I want to use up along with a whole slew of interior and exterior latex paint.
I'm looking for any creative suggestions. Web references are wonderful but I would also greatly appreciate any clever or original ideas.
not sure if they are the right size but.. how about making your own tiki torches? my dad and I have been saving wine bottles and making free standing tiki torches out of those. we "stumpledupon" a website that teaches you how. sorry - don't have the link! but the ones on the site were nailed into the wooden fence.. if you put them on 2 by 4s you could put them all around like stick them in a garden or around a deck or patio...

The garage is often a dumping ground for the typical home. It is also the fix-it man or woman's domain. Keeping things organized is essential for the smooth functioning of the weekend warrior's lair.
Workbench
Nothing claims and defines a workspace in the garage like a big old workbench. It is also the perfect place to bolt down those more stationary tools like grinding wheels and buffers.
There are many options for building a bench from a custom wall mounted unit with room underneath to pipe legs and plywood tops. You can also go for a store bought bench - but, where is the fun in that?
Pegboard Tool Rack
No workbench is complete without a nice hunk of pegboard hanging on the wall behind it to sort and organize tools. The classic version is made from masonite board, but it is now possible to choose diamond tread metal versions that are painted or chromed to give your garage a polished look.
To make the peg wall useful, a wide assortment of hooks and hangers are available to fix your tools to the board.
One useful organization tactic is to draw outlines around the tools to give a visual reference for where each tool belongs. One quick glance will let you know what is missing.
Hooks and Hangers
No garage organization is complete without a whole bunch of hooks and hangers. They can be used to hang bicycles from the ceiling and shovels and rakes from the wall. Do not forget to include a row of hooks for coats hats and other outside work clothes.
Tool Boxes
Tool boxes come in a wide variety of configurations. If your work mostly takes place inside the garage (like working on cars or mowers) then a tall shop toolbox with lots of drawers is a good choice. If you mostly find yourself grabbing the toolbox to work in the house, yard, or on the road, there are a number of toolboxes with wheels and handles to help move things around without breaking your back.
You will probably have more than one toolbox - one for each set of tasks.
Cabinets and Shelves
The garage is home to paint cans and many other containers that need a home. There are also lots of odds and ends that do not fit anywhere else. Cabinets and shelves are the answer to effective storage.
You should have at least one metal storage cabinet to hold flammable products like paints and thinners.

Organize Your Garage With Easy Storage Projects
Most people avoid their garages unless absolutly necessary because for most people, the garage has become a giant cluttered mess. In fact, many people no longer use their garage for their car because the clutter is so overwhelming. However there are many easy solutions for your storage problem. You can finally organize your things and get your area clutter free. Tools will finally get utilized and be easy to find, dog food will no longer be left in bags on the ground and all those stray cleaning items will finally be at hands reach. You may even be able to fit your car into the garage as it was intended.
One basically easy storage solution that you can make yourself is a multi-level rotating shelf that you can tuck away into the corner of your garage. It is designed with the lazy Susan style shelving which rotates completly around giving you easy access to all sides. You also have more storage space because your shelving can start from ground level and go as high as you want.
The rotating design gives you quite a bit of room to store just about anything. It will reduce clutter by storing your painting and cleaning supplies, small bottles and jars, just about anything you can fit on a shelf. Ans since this is a custom made unit, shelves can be made as small or tall as you like, whatever your needs be.
When it comes to tools in the garage, they are one of the most cluttering items in the garage. The best way to organize them is to use a simple pegboard system. You can go as basic as placing the pegboard on the wall itself or get as fancy as making an enclosed cabinet for them. Peg boards are simple to use and very easy to install, even for the most unskilled. Small metal hooks are used to hold up tools on the boards. These come in carious shapes and sizes and can be designed especially for tools.
An even better way to organize the tools utilizing the peg boards is to place an outline of each tool behind it. This makes it easier to identify where each tool fits and when something disappears, you will know what is gone.
For pet owners, a wonderful storage option for pet food is a bin and dispenser. Stores have many options available for purchase, but you can easily make your own where you can have the food dispensed directly into the dogs food dish.
This takes just some basic materials and know-how. In about half a day you can have a great food storage and dispenser for fido's food. Most material can be purchased at home improvement stores and the only tools needed are basic hand tools and power tools. This will cost you anywhere between fifty and ninety dollars, depending on what materials you choose. The neat thing about the wooden storage food box is the blast gates used to dispense the food. While this part will cost you about $10, they are well worth it for medium to large dog food pieces. Smaller things like bird seed may cause the door to jam a bit, but as long as you stick to dog and cat fod, you should not have a problem.
Storage solutions for your garage are vast and this is just the beginning. A few additions will bring great improvements to your home and give you a clutter free storage space. In turn you may be able to finally be able to pull your car into the garage where it was intended to be.

Foam board insulation coverings? Alt to Gypsum board?
I have insulated my garage and need to finish the walls. I was wondering if there is anything I can use other then gypsum board. It is for a garage I was going to put up peg board but I Any other ideas I am wanting to cove it up because of the firr issues.
Sure, you could cover it with plywood or paneling, but either is more expensive than drywall. You could just use the dry wall to cover it and not bother to tape and mud if you don't really care how it looks. Since the garage is not a "living area" you are not usually required to finish the inside. There isn't really much risk with leaving the foam board uncovered, so long as you are not doing anything in the garage that could cause it to melt (like wielding or something).

Storage Cabinets In Your Kitchen

Instead of having to heft plates onto hard- to-reach overhead you can stack them securely between adjustable pegs (round or triangular) in this 12-inch-deep base cabinet drawer. An added bonus: The kids have no excuse not to help unload the dishwasher.
Flip-Top Cabinet
If you've got a little empty wall space, why not put it to use with a stylish stand-alone cabinet? Because this one tapers at the bottom, it can be mounted lower than a standard cabinet, providing easy-to-reach shelving above a sink or countertop. It also works over a kitchen desk for holding pens, paper, cookbooks, and other miscellany.

Pot lids are a problem. They take up too much space and tend to clang around in a most annoying fashion. These deep-on-the-bottom, shallow- on-top base cabinet drawers easily accommodate large stockpots and their notoriously unwieldy lids. The top shelf is also a good spot for those large utensils that get tangled in narrow drawers.
