What is A Restaurant Pos System?
A Restaurant POS (or Point of Service) could be any restaurant POS equipment, hardware and software combined which is the the equivalent of an electronic Cash Register, that is used to process a transaction. A restaurant ncludes several factors that makes a business function effectively. A Pos Terminal is used to accelerate a sales transaction as well as your customers payment. POS (Point of Sale) means the transaction point with a customer.
In a restaurant, there are lots of moving parts that's involved for it's performance. Customer satisfaction is an important factor for any restaurants, bars, casinos, hotels and convenient stores, by meeting your customers' expectations on your products or services, you'll get a higher chance of customer return. The more "regular" customers to your business the higher your profit! So, as the owner, you would want to make sure your employees are giving orders accurately, give assistance to customers and make an overall excellent performance all the time. With the use of a restaurant POS software, the ones with Touch Screen technology, decreases ordering time by 50% and increases ordering accuracy.
Because every retail businesses' goal is to increase their profit, many Retail Pos system vendors have developed new systems that can produce excellent results like the POS systems that enables you to integrate your accounting software such as QuickBooks and Peachtree. By installing a POS software that can help you manage your inventory, you will see and increase in efficiency with its advance management features, you can associate any information with the items as well, such as purchase date or date of expiry, you will never have to back to manual system ever again.
Difficulties with ordering system. Placing an order should have the right timing, order too late and you will run out of an item, order too soon can cause a risk of the item going bad. Installing automated inventory management enables you to increase the efficiency of your products orders, set a special alert to notify you and your staff when products are running low and need re-ordering, as well as set notification when expiration dates are nearing. So if your restaurant still doesn't have a inventory management installed as part of your POS system the time is NOW to do so.

average pricing implementation in a POS application?
I am developing a POS (Point of Sale) application which should be able to calculate average price. Here is the deal, i don't know what it is and how it is calculated for consumer products. I just got this requirement. All i know is this, that there is no way to know from which particular stock of goods, an item was sold from. Has anyone done anything similar, please help me out on this. or if you could suggest me to some resource.
I am not very good with business vocabulary so please ask me again if there are ambiguities in this problem statement.
As a retailer, I am not sure i understand your problem.
Any product in a stock can be identified as being part of that stock by it's product code. Once the code is put into the program, the program should be able to reduce the stock level for that exact group.
Example: Stock is kept in two locations. The stock code for product A can be either A-01 or A-02. When the product code is input, the program knows not only what product, but which stock group it came from.

Restaurant Pos Software for the Hospitality Trade
Almost all restaurants and retail stores now employ hospitality pos systems in one flavour or another. The advances in computer technology and pos software has made it possible for smaller retail outlets and fast food stores to compete on a level playing field against large corporations with out breaking the bank.
Point of Sale System software has come down in price over the years to an affordable level allowing many of the smaller retail chains to purchase these Retail Software systems.
Pos Software is designed to be modular yet simple to update and easy to manage, allowing smaller restaurants and shops to install basic systems and software functionality, but with the ability to upgrade by switching on built in modules as and when business dictates.
After two decades of using and installing other manufacturers software, Epos-Pos decided it was time to produce a pos and Restaurant Software, which would be user friendly, fully modular and upgradeable, but more importantly took the best from all other software’s on the market and combined this into one truly versatile package.
After several years of development we finally produced exactly what the customers wanted, a powerful yet easy to use flexible hospitality pos software suite, which could be used by both the hospitality and retail trade.
Software comes in three packages
1: small retail point of sales outlets
2: Pubs, Clubs, Bars and Restaurant
3: large corporate hospitality chains
A Rolls Royce of hospitality, with every required feature add on included
1: phone caller id for the takeaway market
2: Remote PDA for pubs bars and restaurants
3: Employee payment and administration control
4: Stock control and inventory monitoring
5: Customer loyalty and a host of modules are available
6: full stock control reporting, web sales integration
Most customers wanted a stylish yet functional system, which could be upgraded at the touch of a button. Our licensing system enabled us to do exactly this, give a fully featured pos software package with all modules installed but the more advanced features disabled until a licence key is purchased. This made it much easier for clients, knowing there was no programming or software downloads needed to upgrade to extra features.
This Pos System Software has increased efficiency and decreased service times of orders.
Epos-Pos have done exactly this what is set out to achieve. Epos-Pos have been involved in electronic point of sales solutions for more than 30 years developing installing and supplying restaurant pos software and point of sale hardware systems.

Restaurant Pos Terminal
Restaurant Pos Terminal

Questions to ask to your Restaurant Pos Terminal vendor
What To Ask To A POS Vendor
How Many Restaurant POS Terminal/Station Will I Need?
* Considering peak customer volume
You must plan the number of stations based on peak business. If you don’t you won’t be able to sufficiently handle the flow of customers during these periods.
* Number of staff taking orders
For a table service environment we suggest 1 station for every 3-5 servers. High volume areas such as bars and cashier stations may need to have a dedicated station for that purpose. When switching to a Pos System from a Cash Register many people make the mistake of forgetting that their POS system will not only be used for cashing people out, but will now be used for order entry as well.
* Manage your restaurant layout wisely
If you have a bar you can bet the bartender will need his or her own station. Other stations should be located where servers can easily get at them.
* Having proper location where your customers pay for their meals
If you want your customers to pay for their meals though your servers carrying their own banks, then I suggest assigning fewer servers per station. But if you want them to pay at front, having 1 or 2 dedicated cashier stations would be better for speedy transactions.
What type of POS computer would be best for my business?
* Desktop: standard desktop computers.
o Least expensive computer option
o With a gurantee of 3 years of onsite warranty
o Takes more space but can be hidden away below a counter
o Flexible enough for adding extra ports
o Latest CPU speeds and memory
o Screen and computer are separate; in case of technical problems problems are isolated.
* Small form factor: originally phrased as shuttle form factor, a smaller type of PC.
o Compared to the standard computer, SFF is more stylish
o 3 Year Onsite Warranty Standard for this component
o Space-saving
o Fewer options for expandability
o Latest CPU speeds and memory
o Screen and computer are separate; in case of technical problems problems are isolated.
* All-in-ones:
the combination of touchscreen and computer.
o Stylish, space-saving terminal with fewer wires required
o Manufacturers warranty: 1-2 years (Not onsite)
o Comes standard with sufficient ports for almost any operation
o CPU speed is generally slower than the other two options but sufficient for the Point of Sale needs.
o Combined screen and computer
How many cash will I need?
* You may easily observe how many cash drawers your restaurant will need, unless your servers carry their own cash banks you should have a Cash Drawer at every station for ending transactions.
Integrated debit cards?
* Your POS systems can be used to process and keep records of all credit Card Transactions and allows you to store them in one convenient location.
* Can reduce seconds of transaction time with a High Speed internet.
* A standalone terminal can be used in place if you do not have high speed internet connection.
How many kitchen/bar printers?
* Having one printer for your kitchen would be sufficient for your restaurant, not unless you have different sections serving different dishes inside your kitchen then it would be better if you place printers on all sections.
* For example, you can print all appetizer orders on one printer and have all your main dish printed on another.
* When choosing for printers to use for your kitchen and bar, use impact (dot-matrix) printers instead of thermal printers. Why? Because tickets that are printed on thermal printers becomes unreadable when exposed to heat, and the loud printing of impact printers can alert your cooks and bartenders that an order is coming through.
Is it essential to have more than 1 Receipt Printer?
* Since you're going to have more than one station, you would likely need more than just one receipt printer.
Do I need a back office computer?
* Having a back office computer allows managers to access POS systems for checking inventory levels, changing a menu, and even adjusting employee clock times.
* It's not quite necessary to have a back office computer for your restaurant, if you have less than 4 stations.. But if you do, it's always a great idea to host the database on a back office computer if you do have 4 or more stations so that none of the stations has the additional load of running the database.

Point of Sale (POS): PCI & Credit Card Security Background
From the day magnetic strip cards was introduced to people, both restaurant owners and their customers have been enjoying the convenience of accepting and using credit and debit cards. However, given the sky high cost and frequency of credit fraud, well established card brands (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JCB) have taken preventive measures to safeguard their stakeholders.
It was in 1968 when IBM created the Magnetic Stripe on Credit Cards and became the industry standard. Given that the track data on the mag stripe can easily be read and duplicated, the branded cards, the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council built a set of standards protect cardholder data, and it begins with the directive: ‘Don’t store track data.’
PCI Standards
The PCI Security Standards Council had a three-pronged approach to protecting consumers, banks and merchants/restaurateurs:
* PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) ? includes all entities that store, process, or transmit cardholder data: Merchants, restaurateurs, service providers, processors, etc.
Compliance Deadline: Month of January 2007 (deadlines are long passed)
What it Means – Restaurant owners, regardless of their establishments' size, must complete and submit a PCI Self-Assessment Questionnaire to their Acquiring Bank every year.
* PA?DSS (Payment Application Data Security Standard) ? embraces all applications used to store, process, or transmit cardholder data as part of authorization or settlement. (
Point-of-Sale (POS)
application developers)
Deadlines for Compliance:
Oct. 1, 2008 ? Payment processors, agents and merchants must use software that is compliant with the new payment application security standards.
Oct. 1, 2009 ? Terminate any noncompliant payment applications that merchants might still be using in their environments will be required.
July 1, 2010 ? Mandates the use of only those payment applications that support the new standards.
What this Means – After these deadlines, merchants/restaurateurs that are still using a non-PA DSS-validated application, they automatically fail the PCI assessment and could lose their ability to Accept Credit cards.
* Pin Entry Devices (PED) Standard – includes all PEDs and is aimed at ensuring that the cardholder’s PIN, and any sensitive information are protected consistently at a PIN acceptance device, like your resident keys.
Deadline for Compliance:
Jan. 1, 2004 ? To all newly purchased
Point-of-Sale (POS)
PIN Entry Devices should pass testing by a Visa recognized laboratory and approved by Visa.
July 1, 2010 ? Mandates that each Point of Sale (POS) PEDs must have passed the testing of a PCI recognized laboratory and been approved by the PCI SSC.
What this Means ? All Merchants/restaurant owners gets two years to replace their old and unapproved PIN Entry Devices.
PCI Do's
- Do routine vulnerability scans of your systems.
- Do security awareness training for all of your staff.
- Audits for system access.
- System activity logs should be monitored.
- Access privileges must be removed for separated employees.
- Install software patches.
- Be serious when it comes to any threats, device an incident response plan.
PCI Don’ts
- Whole credit card numbers should not be stored or archived.
- Transmitting credit card information unencrypted should not be practiced.
- With PCI, it's not just about making you compliant with the standards – it's all about making you and your customers protected.
PCI's Effect on Restaurateurs
Given consumers’ expectation of universal acceptance of using credit cards, merchants'/restaurateurs’ validation that they are providing protection to their customers' personal data is helpful for business:
Business Reputation / Image
For a highly competitive business – a restaurant owner does not want to be named in the media as the place were card data was stolen.
Protects Ability to Accept Credit / Debit Card Payments - by not complying and/or a breach can jeopardize a merchants'/restaurateur’s ability to accept credit/debit payments. There are cases that 80% to 90% of transactions are through credit/debit payments. Losing your store's ability to accept credit/debit cards can cause reduced customers = reduced sales.
Impact of State Privacy Laws
A failure to meet one's obligations that discloses personal credit card information with any of the 40+ States with privacy laws may have a double impact on a restaurateur. Being off-side with PCI might result in fines and lawsuit costs. Being off-side with State Privacy Laws is a crime punishable by confinement with potentially more serious penalties.
Compliance / Security Strategy
- By making sure your restaurant or store uses PA?DSS or PABP validated POS systems
- Ensure you are using an approved PED
- Arrange for regular security awareness training for your employees, especially for supervisors
- Do background checks on any employee with administrative access to your system
- Have your staff sign a ‘Confidentiality Agreement’
- When it comes to your PCI Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), carefully and accurately complete the form and when you're not sure with your answers, just ask
- If gaps in PCI compliance are identified, develop a realistic plan to remediate them
- Be matured in sustaining compliance
- Access controls
- Dual factor for system and device management
- Proper storing of your strong passwords and secure passwords
- Regularly monitor system activities for possible attacks and record evidences
- Controlling your wireless access points
- Maintain secure configuration
- Segment networks
- Have an Incident Response Plan and test it to make sure that it's always ready when needed
- Test and audit the cardholder environment carefully
It may be difficult task the first time but when all the above are in place, a PCI compliance is not an expensive undertaking. It is good business practice to protect the sensitive information of your customers.

Point of Sale Systems 101 - the Basics
Point of Sale Systems 101
The chances are, if you're reading this, you're searching for a point of Sale System for your business. Before you make a decision on purchasing anything, it is imperative for business owners or operators to learn and research as much as you can regarding the product in question. You need to ask yourself a few questions. One of them being - "what features & functions would I need from a Pos System for my business?". While you think about that, let us explain briefly on the basics of a POS System.
Which factor makes a point of sale system most valuable? A POS system should help you alleviate the daily chores of your business. A POS system should not interfere or make it harder for you to run your business. It should run parallel to your business operation. A perfect POS system should run your business for you, but not in a literal sense where it takes TOTAL control. You want one comprehensive package for your entire business, either small or large. And it should scale as much as your business grows.
Apples to Oranges : Electronic Cash Registers (ECR) vs. Retail Pos Systems
Being in the retail environment, we're sure you've experienced the highs and lows of the industry. Disregarding that fact for the time being, compare a Retail Store with a POS System to an almost identical store with a standard electronic Cash Register - there are much differences than first meets the eye.
Generally, small businesses (even medium sized businesses as well) avoid using a Point of Sale Systems. The major reason being the cost. Secondly, they may be so used to their current ways of manually punching in each item into the register, counting inventory on paper and jotting down the daily summary into a log book.
A big portion of these business owners are afraid of investing the time and money in a POS system to only end up regretting it because it just didn't work as they had hoped for. And this is very understandable. The cost of a complete Point of Sale System with all the necessary hardware & software isn't cheap for small business owners.
The Misperceived Fear
Although this fear of trying something new and failing is very real, businesses running out-dated Electronic Cash registers are actually hindering their own growth. Ringing up sales is just about what an Electronic Cash Register is capable of. So in the long run, they're missing out on all of the necessary elements that help a business grow and flourish. Especially in the retail industry, it is important to have such tools that only a Point of Sale System can provide at your fingertips. The most obvious being: error-free sales transactions, accurate pricing information, inventory management, customer tracking & forecasting, automated purchase orders and sales/daily closing reports.
Return on Investment (ROI)
Now, if you consider and really analyze all of those missing links in your business - then things start to become a bit clearer and evident. The return on investment (ROI) differences for the two businesses become astounding. Simply put, a business has to invest in itself, be it time or money - to be able to grow.
Consider this, with a point of sale system, the long line at the checkout counter can move much faster. Being able to just scan all of the items into the system, while automatically deducting each sold item off the inventory count, generating the total price, receiving cash or swiping card, printing receipt, bagging items if necessary and the customer is out the door before you can say "oh, wait!". Just think about how much longer it'll take with just a plain old cash register (keep in mind the inventory count factor). Even a few seconds is a drastic improvement to your turnaround times. Imagine how many more customers you can checkout. And we haven't even considered the returns and exchanges!
A Point of Sale System provides all of the necessary information a business needs to make critical decisions. It provides flexible reporting and cost & labor saving inventory management tools that help identify vulnerable areas of the business.
Another feature that just cannot be done without a retail point of sale system is customer loyalty programs /frequent shopper program. Such initiatives reward loyal customers with incentives that in turn encourages them to purchase from your business more frequently.
Additional Revenue with Streamlined Operations
Electronic Commerce, aka Ecommerce - is a booming trend for Small Businesses. Once something that could only have been realized by large corporations, it is now possible for small businesses to sell online with ease. For retail stores that might want to venture out into selling on the internet, a retail point of sale system will prove to be most beneficial. All of the sales in the physical location can be in sync with all of the online sales.
The online shop will know when the item is sold out at the retail store, in turn stating that the item is out of stock. And this happens in Real Time. One price adjustment can affect both operations, coupon codes can be streamlined and discounts can be applied in one effort. All of these features help you run your business your way, the way it's meant to be run - plus it keeps your customers happy.
Many point of sale systems are capable of ecommerce integration, but research the details. Each company may offer different things. Learn about which features can be streamlined between the pos system and the online Shopping Cart, and if it suits your business' needs. A point of sale system can help propel your Retail Business, regardless of current size or future goals, to new heights while satisfying all of your business needs.
