What surface can I iron clothes on?
Is it safe to I place my shirt on my wooden desk and iron it? I just got an iron for my dorm but forgot that I don't have an ironing board for it. What would be a safe alternate surface to use to iron my clothes on?
I've used my iron on many hard surfaces. Just be sure to lay down a bath towel before doing so. I do use steam if necessary and if it is something that needs extra hot heat, I double the towel. Works great.

These measurements should be equal. Remove any grass or weeds from the measured area using a shovel, to shape your working space. Afterwards, before closing off this working space with decking, apply mulch over this space to restrain weeds.
Materials for wood deck
Some of the supplies from the hardware store, you will need to build a deck are likely to include the following materials. Flashing, Caulking compound, Pre-mixed concrete, Gravel or crushed stone, Cinder blocks, Post caps, Post bases, Seismic ties, Joist hangers, Cardboard tube concrete forms, Rebar.
If you want to use nails, use stainless steel or HDG nails. This can be either ring-shank nails or spiral-groove, for better holding power. But it would be preferable to use deck screws. Some of the other tools one might need for this deck project are follows. Shovel, Carpenter's level, Carpenter's square, Plumb bob, Wheelbarrow (for mixing concrete), Caulking gun, Drill, Wrench (to tighten lag screws), Hammer, Circular saw, Tape measure, Safety eyewear, Scrap lumber for bracing.
Final step
The final major step is wounding the decking boards themselves and screwing them to the tops of the joists. Totter the decking so that the seams don't all line up; the deck will not only be steadier structurally this way, but will also look superior.
If your deck will be elevated off the ground, building codes dictate adding a railing. By the way, an accepted substitute now to wood decking is composite decking. However, amalgamated materials still aren't as strong as good old wood, so composite decking must be support by wooden elements.

the second 3x3cm, and the largest 4x6cm. If each frame is made up of four pieces of timber to go around the edge of the photograph and one diagonal support, how much timber is needed to make the three frames? Give your answer in simplest SURD form..

for the diagonal support
= (2*2 + 2*2)^1/2 + (3*3 + 3*3)^1/2 + (4*4 + 6*6)^1/2
= (8)^1/2 + (18)^1/2 + (52)^1/2
= 2.83 + 4.24 + 7.2
=14.27
Total timber needed is 40+14.27 = 54.27 cm

what happens if you lay a wooden floor on a slightly unlevel base?
I have layed a solid oak floating wooden floor (panelled) on a concrete base and have noticed that in a few areas (approx 4) the boards bow slightly when you walk on them. I assume this is because I have a lsightly unlevel floor. What will happen though if I leave it?
Also, according, to the instructions I have places expansion gap pegs at 10-15mm along the edge. i have read that this can later be filled with a cork expansion strip? is this right or should I leave the gap and just take out the pegs?
I am new to this laying of floors trade so any advice is most appreciated. Thankyou
It would be ok to remove the pegs around the edge of the floor and replace with cork strips as wood needs room to expand when the humidity is high. However the bowing boards issue needs to be addressed with floor leveler compound, also there should be a moisture barrier between the cement floor and the wood. Sounds like starting over would be best in the long run.

Today, sitting down at the pc, I tucked my skirt beneath me.
Trouble is, I weigh quite a bit, and I was sitting on a wooden chair. Accidentally pinched my fingers between the back of my upper leg and the edge of the chair. It really stung! I've never done anything as dumb as THAT before!
What have you done?
I broke my toe when it got stuck in the boardwalk while walking. I couldn't make that happen again if I tried!!

Hang On! Hangers for Everyone
One of the essential needs of mankind is clothing. People flock to the malls to shop for garments. There they find a huge choice, neatly displayed. Ready to pick and choose? Most clothing is attractively displayed by the use of wooden, plastic or metallic wire hangers.
At home a major use of storage space is to store clothing, shoes, and garments. People take convenient easy to use clothing storage options for granted.
Origin of Hangers
It was not quite like this till the late 1800s and early 1900s. Till that time clothes were simply folded and stored. This was not great for the shirt or pants nor was it a great way to display. This led to the invention of the clothes hanger. The garment retailers and dry cleaners led its adoption to display and store garments.
In time hangers were used to store apparel at home too.
It was an elegant invention. It stored the garment without creasing it, saved space and was a great help in displaying the garment.
Design
Most of the garments like the shirt, suit coat, and sweater hang on the body of the wearer from his shoulder. This lead to the design of the hanger in the shape of a person's shoulder. A lower bar was added to hang trousers, skirts etc. A hook or clamp was added to the design to enable it to be hanged from a fixture.
The hanger allows the garment to be stored in the form in which it is worn without creasing. It saves space and also makes it easy to store or remove a garment. Therefore it is also used for garment inventories.
Types- Metal, Wooden and Plastic
At first there were wooden and metallic wire hangers. Plastic ones were introduced at a later stage and are mostly found in households. The wooden hanger was beautified by coating of lacquer on natural finished hardwood, and are use for display in shops. Metallic hangers are also inexpensive and can serve for a lifetime.
Modern trends
The modern trends are in the direction of luxury, environmental concerns and innovative use of materials. Examples of luxury are hangers specially designed for pet apparel.
The concern for the environment leads to the issue of recycling. Despite being able to serve a lifetime they do have a shelf life after which they are discarded and thrown in landfills. It becomes environmentally hazardous as some toxic materials are used in lacquer and plastics. Hence plastic ones are now being recycled but to a limited extent.
Hangers arrived as innovations and the innovation continues. One example is a one with a comic Face Display that changes when clothes are hung on it. This excites children and attracts them towards their use and not dump their clothes around the house.
Another example is one with a magnet in place of the hook. The magnet attaches itself to a metallic cupboard's roof. This does away with the need for a bar. It therefore allows greater freedom to store clothes in a cupboard.
